When you try to make a copy of Google Slides or Google Sheets activities you may have come across the error “Sorry, unable to open the file at this time. Please check the address and try again”.

The last thing you want when you have purchased an activity to use with your class is not be able to access it.

How do I fix the error “Sorry, unable to open the file at this time." when trying to make a copy of a file?

Try each of the following troubleshooting steps in turn to help you access your Google Sheets or Google Slides activities.

  1. Make sure you are on a desktop computer – the links may not work if you are on a tablet or smartphone.
  2. Right click on the link in the pdf and select “Copy Link Location” then paste this into your browser address bar (Chrome, Safari etc)
  3. Try the following to see if you can view the file:
    • change the /copy at the end to /view (make sure you delete anything after this
    • You should be able to see the file
    • Go to “File>Make a Copy” It should prompt you to make a copy in your google drive
  1. Try opening the link in a different browser (if you’re using Safari try Chrome/Firefox/Microsoft Edge etc)
  2. Make sure you are only signed in with the Google Account that you want the file associated with
  3. If you have associated your Google Account with a non Gmail email (e.g. it does not end in @‌gmail.com) it will cause this error. Try again with a Google account that has a Gmail.com email associated.
  4. If you are using a District computer they may have outside links blocked:
    • speak to your tech person about how to get around this
    • try again at home on your computer.
    • Opening it in an incognito browser window and signing into Google with the credentials associated with your Drive may work.
  5. There may be a Google Issue, try again in a little while.
