The Frustrations of Uploading Images to Google Sheets

We’ve all been there – click, drag, wait… repeat. Manual image uploading is more than just a chore; it’s a productivity killer. With the average manual upload speed lingering at a snail-paced 10 images per minute, it’s time lost that you can never get back.

But it’s not just the time. It’s the hope that maybe, just maybe, there’s a better way hidden in an add-on out there. So you search, you find, and then you’re faced with the unsettling request: full edit access to your Google Drive. It’s a security risk many of us are not willing to take.

So you search again, and you’re met with a new set of challenges: images uploading out of order, the relentless sorting that follows, literally wasting more time than uploading yourself one by one.

Finally, you think you’ve found one, it’s great it uploads in order, it doesn’t want access to your Drive, BUT the tool inserts the images by using a URL rather than inserting the image in the cell. You realise that this could cause issues with your activities and the ultimate dread of image links breaking down, leading to dreaded ‘X’ placeholders where your images should be.

In my quest for a better solution, I spiraled down the rabbit hole of add-ons. I tested tool after tool, each promising to answer my woes. Yet, time and again, I found myself right back at square one, manually uploading was actually quicker. It was this exasperating cycle, this colossal waste of time and energy, that sparked a realization: I needed to create the tool that I wished existed – a bulk image uploader that worked precisely the way I needed it to, without the fuss or the risk. So I did.

Crafting the Bulk Image Uploader: Simplicity in an Excel File

I created the tool with myself and friend Stephen, who frequently uploads 200 odd images at a time, in mind. Developing something that solved all those issues with the addons I had tried out.

Key Features of the Bulk Image Uploader:

  • Direct Upload to Cells: Images are uploaded straight into the cells, bypassing the chaos of URL links and the fear of broken images.
  • No Edit Access Required: Your Google Drive remains secure; you only need to upload the spreadheet with the images in to your Drive.
  • Preserves Image Order: Say goodbye to the jigsaw puzzle of sorting images. Uploads are done in the exact order you intend, every time.
  • Upload Hundreds of Images at a Time: The uploader can handle hundreds of images at the same time without much difference in time between uploading 60 or 600.

I developed the Bulk Image Uploader in Excel, being more familiar with VBA than Google Sheets’ coding language.

This also enabled me to add a user interface with step-by-step instructions. This design choice ensures ease of use for everyone, streamlining a once time-consuming task into a quick, efficient process.

FAQs

How many images can I upload at once?

I’ve used it for 600 images recently and it works perfectly. Be aware the more images you upload at once (and the larger the images) the longer it will take to upload. 600 took about 20 seconds to populate in Excel.

Can I use this on a Mac/iPad/Tablet?

Sorry currently this will not operate on a Mac or tablet. You need to have a windows desktop version of Excel where you are able to run Macros.

What are Macros?

A macro in Excel is like a shortcut for repetitive tasks. It’s a small program that can perform a series of actions automatically. It is written in Excel’s Coding language VBA.

What do the Macros do in the Bulk Image Uploader?

The macros in this program insert the images from the folder you select into the correct place in Excel so that when you upload the sheet into Google Sheets the images are placed automatically in the cells for you. Saving you so much time!

There are warnings about Macros, why is this?

Macros are safe as long as you trust the place you got the file from. Macros can be used for nefarious purposes by hackers which is why Microsoft has a warning pop up when you open a file you have downloaded that has a Macro attached. I can assure you this file does not contain any malicious code because I wrote it all myself from scratch.
