Halloween Math Tessellations Art Activity

$4.00

Halloween-themed tessellation activity for students to complete as part of a math/art project or for early finishers. This will be great for display! This could last more than a whole lesson if you get the students to tessellate a design and then also color it. There are multiple different ways to differentiate this activity. For example you could give some students one of the harder shapes, some one of the easier shapes and then some students could be given one of the solutions pages to color if they struggle to create the tessellations.

Includes in order of difficulty:

Candy Corn

Skull

Jack-O’-Lantern

Cat

Spider

Bat

Ghost

Witches hat

For each shape there are the following types of sheets:

* A portrait sheet with small squares and a small shape to start students off

* A portrait sheet with big squares and a big shape to start students off

* A landscape sheet with small squares and a small shape to start students off

* A landscape sheet with big squares and a big shape to start students off

* A small template which is approx 1/8 of a page

Instructions:

A tessellation is when you cover a surface in a pattern of flat shapes with NO GAPS.

Easy – print off the template (big or small) and cut it out on card. Students should try and use the template to make a repeating pattern with the shapes with NO gaps (see the Examples of how to tessellate the shape to see how it fits together). When they have filled out the whole page then they could color it in.

Harder – Give students one of the squared sheets without a template and get them to tessellate the given shape using the squares as a guide.
